Virginia Lawyers Determined in Defending Juveniles

Skilled Charlottesville attorneys seek dismissals, plea deals and exoneration

If your teenage child was taken into custody and accused of committing a juvenile offense in Virginia, you may feel like your family is stuck in a nightmare. For the best chance of receiving a favorable outcome, it is prudent to obtain representation from a law firm with the resources to provide personalized attention. The experienced and dedicated attorneys at Tucker Griffin Barnes P.C. in Charlottesville, Palmyra and Harrisonburg skillfully defend juveniles in court, helping them get past the difficulty of their current situation so they can move forward with their lives.

Committed defense attorneys represent first-time and repeat offenders

We will bring an assertive and strategic legal response to juvenile charges such as:

  • Shoplifting — The value of the shoplifted items and how they were handled often determine the punishments for stealing merchandise, changing price tags, concealing items with intent to take them or helping friends do any of those things.
  • Vandalism —Drawing graffiti or otherwise defacing or damaging property, including property at school, can result in a vandalism petition. Parents can be made to pay up to $2,500 when their children are found delinquent of committing vandalism.
  • Breaking curfew — Each recorded curfew violation is a misdemeanor. While warnings may be issued for the first or second offenses, repeat offenders can face considerable penalties.
  • Underage possession or purchase of alcohol — Being convicted for violating the legal drinking age can land a Virginia teen a loss of driving privileges and a mandatory minimum fine of $500 or a mandatory 50 hours of community service. Judges are also authorized to order substance-abuse counseling and up to a year in jail.
  • Disorderly conduct — A student who intentionally disrupts the orderly conduct of a school function or substantially disrupts the learning environment may face discipline. Disorderly conduct also covers acts outside of school that are considered a public inconvenience.
  • Trespassing — Entering a home or other property without permission, or remaining there against the owner’s wishes, generally carries a misdemeanor charge.

At the our firm, we also defend serious cases where a juvenile found to be delinquent faces being placed in a detention home, a boot camp, a juvenile correctional facility or under the custody of different parental guardians.

Committed lawyers guide minors and their families through the legal process

When a person under the age of 18 is accused of committing an offense in Virginia, having a qualified attorney in the courtroom is essential. Often, parents or guardians are also required to participate in disposition proceedings. We walk minors and their families through every step of the juvenile justice process, from the filing of the initial charge through a dispositional hearing where the judge determines the appropriate penalties. We also help with appeals of judges’ decisions.

The attorneys at Tucker Griffin Barnes P.C. understand that kids deserve second chances. As experienced advocates for accused youthful offenders, we are thoughtful and attentive in our defense approach.
